Abu Dhabi has a big date on the calendar. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open its doors on 11 December 2026. This is a new museum for modern and contemporary art, and people have waited a very long time for it.

Twenty Years in the Making

Here is a fact that surprises most people: the museum was first announced in 2006. That means the opening in December 2026 comes exactly 20 years later. Construction began in 2011 and continued in stages over the years, with the main building phase running from 2019 onward. 

During this time, the museum still shared its collection with the public. In 2014, it presented a preview show called "Seeing Through Light." In 2017, it staged another preview called "The Creative Act," which included a huge sculpture by Anish Kapoor called My Red Homeland.

A Final Gift from Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry designed the building, drawing shapes from the region around him. Gehry passed away on 5 December 2025, at age 96, after a career spanning six decades and landmark buildings around the world. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi stands as one of his last major projects, and his firm, Gehry Partners, is carrying his vision through to completion.

One detail people love: the cone shapes on the roof are not random. Gehry based them on traditional wind towers, called barjeel, which people in the Gulf region used for centuries to cool buildings before air conditioning existed.

Where It Is

The museum stands in Saadiyat Cultural District, on Saadiyat Island. It joins other museums in the same area, like Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Together, these buildings make Saadiyat one of the biggest groups of museums in the world.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi also belongs to a family of Guggenheim museums. There are others in New York, Venice, and Bilbao. But this museum has its own style and story, shaped by the region and its history.

The Building

The building has a strong, unusual shape. It has 30 galleries inside, connected by a big central atrium. On the outside, ten cone shapes rise above the building. Nine of them are covered in stainless steel mesh, and one is made of onyx and glass. The tallest cones reach 88 metres. These cones help with air flow and shade, which makes the building more energy efficient.

The full size of the project is large: 11,600 square metres of gallery space inside, plus 23,000 square metres for outdoor exhibitions. The total built area is 80,000 square metres. This makes it the biggest museum in the whole Guggenheim network, bigger than the branches in New York, Venice, and Bilbao. It is also only the fourth museum in the world allowed to carry the Guggenheim name.

The Collection

The museum has been building its art collection since 2009, so it started collecting art 17 years before it even opened. It will focus on art from the 1960s to today. By early 2026, the collection had grown to more than 970 artworks, made by 429 artists from over 70 countries. A lot of the works come from West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia, but the collection also includes art from all over the world.

Visitors will not walk through the museum in one fixed order. Instead, they can choose their own path through the galleries. The museum organizes its art around big themes, such as Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language, and Storytelling. The idea is to show connections between artworks, places, and time periods, instead of telling one straight history.

What Will Happen There

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will host international exhibitions, new artist commissions, research projects, and education programmes. More details about the first shows and commissions will come in the next months.
