Etihad Rail Launch 2026: Inside the UAE's First-Ever Passenger Train (Abu Dhabi to Fujairah)

Everything you need to know about the Etihad Rail passenger service launch date, route, ticket prices, train classes, and onboard features as the UAE opens its first national railway (source).

On June 30, 2026, a train will leave Mohamed bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi. It will go to Al Hilal City in Fujairah. The trip will take one hour and 45 minutes. This sounds like a small piece of news, but it is not. The UAE has never had a passenger train before. This is the first one.

Etihad Rail Passenger Service: Routes, Stations, and Ticket Prices

Etihad Rail has run freight trains since 2016. These trains carry sulfur for 264 kilometers, from Shah and Habshan to Ruwais. So far, this network has moved more than 30 million tonnes of cargo. That is about the same as 2.8 million truck trips. It has been a quiet success. Most people outside the logistics world never heard about it.

Now things are different. For the first time, people can buy a ticket and take a train. Tickets for the first route cost AED 55 for Comfort Class and AED 120 for Premium Class. People could start buying tickets on June 23. Demand has been strong since day one.

The Abu Dhabi to Fujairah route is only the first step. The full network opens on September 30, 2026. On that day, two new stations open: Dubai Station at Jumeirah Golf Estates, and Al Dhaid Station in Sharjah. Al Dhafra Station opens in December. Sharjah's University City Station opens by March 2027. In the end, the network will connect 11 cities and areas. It will cover almost 1,200 kilometers across all seven emirates.

How the UAE Built a National Railway in Five Years

The UAE announced the Railways Programme in 2021. This was part of a bigger plan called "Projects of the 50." Going from an announcement to real passengers in five years is fast for a national railway. The numbers behind this project are big: 24.5 million work hours, more than 7,000 workers and experts, and three years of planning and building. All of this came after the freight network was already running.

Government officials say the speed of this project sends a clear message. Finishing a big project early shows that the UAE can build large things on time.

Etihad Rail Train Classes, Speed, and Onboard Features

In May, journalists got an early look at the trains in Fujairah. The station has cream and grey walls, big glass windows, and automatic gates. Inside the train, seats have plenty of legroom, free Wi-Fi, and a power socket at every seat. There are also fold-down tables, space for bags above and under the seats, and special seating for families and pregnant women.

The fleet has two different train models. One model holds 365 people. The other holds 369 people. By the time of launch, 10 of the 13 planned trains were already built, tested, and approved. Top speed is 200 km/h. This means the trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi will take about 57 minutes once that route opens in September. The trip to Fujairah takes about 100 minutes. The trip to Ruwais takes about 70 minutes.

The Etihad Rail Luxury Train: A Desert Orient Express

There is also a smaller but very special project here. Etihad Rail is working with a luxury travel company called Arsenale to build a luxury train. The plan includes 15 luxury train cars. The train will travel through Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Fujairah, then continue toward Oman through the Liwa Desert. Passengers will see sand dunes, mountains, and the coast from the train windows.

This luxury train is just one small part of the whole rail project. But it is the part that gets the most attention. It turns a transport project into a travel experience that people want to try for fun.

Etihad Rail's First Passenger Journey: What to Expect at the Launch

On June 23, one week before the first train ride, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, opened the Mohamed bin Zayed City station. Etihad Rail also asked the public to nominate people for the first train ride. They want people from healthcare, education, and community work to be on this train. This turns the first journey into a way to honor everyday heroes.

Why the Etihad Rail Launch Matters for the UAE

Even without the ceremony, the facts speak for themselves. A trip of under one hour between Dubai and Abu Dhabi solves a real problem for workers and businesses. A train to Fujairah gives people an easy way to reach the east coast, without a two-hour car drive. By 2030, Etihad Rail expects to carry about 36 million passengers every year. The goal is to reduce traffic on the roads and lower pollution, in a country built around cars and planes.

The freight line already proved that the technology works well. Now the passenger line will prove that trains can also serve everyday people, not just cargo. What started as a small freight project in 2016 has grown into a key part of how the UAE plans to move its people for many years ahead. On June 30, this plan becomes something real that people can actually ride.
