5 Free Places to Visit in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is famous for luxury. Big hotels, tall towers, and fine restaurants. The city also offers many free experiences, right alongside the luxury. Here are 5 free places to add to your next trip.

1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

This is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, and it's completely free to visit.

The mosque has white marble walls, huge domes, and gold details. Inside the main hall, there is one of the largest carpets on earth. It took years to make. Outside, the courtyard has flower patterns made from real stones.

Entry and the official tour are free. You just need to register online before you go. There is a dress code too: shoulders and legs should be covered, and women wear a headscarf inside the prayer hall.

Tip: Go in the late afternoon. The white marble looks even better with soft evening light, and the air feels cooler.

2. Emirates Palace

This five-star palace hotel welcomes everyone to explore its public areas, free of charge.

Emirates Palace has huge arches, gold ceilings, and a lobby that feels like something from a movie. There's also a fountain in the main courtyard, with palm trees on both sides. You can walk in, look around, and take photos in the public spaces at no cost.

For an extra experience, you can pay for the beach, the pools, or a guided tour. A simple walk through the lobby and a coffee already make a memorable visit.

Tip: Visit at sunset. The building lights up and the sky turns pink and orange behind it.

3. Liwa Desert

Liwa gives you a real desert, wide open and quiet. This is the area where parts of the Dune movies were filmed, and once you see the dunes, you'll understand why.

The sand here is deep orange, and the dunes are some of the tallest in the world. You can drive along public roads and stop wherever you like to take photos, completely free. Guided safaris, dune bashing, and off-road tours are also available, for travellers who want to go further into the sand.

Liwa is about 2 to 3 hours from Abu Dhabi city, so it makes a great full-day trip.

Tip: Go early morning or close to sunset. The light is softer then, and it's a more comfortable time to be outside.

4. Abu Dhabi Corniche

The Corniche is Abu Dhabi's main waterfront. It's a long path next to the sea, with the city skyline behind it.

You can walk, run, cycle, or simply sit and watch the water. There are green parks along the way, and a public beach where you can swim for free. Private beach clubs offer sunbeds and extra facilities for a fee, while the main promenade and public beach stay free for everyone.

It's a great place to watch the sunset, especially with the towers lighting up behind you.

Tip: Rent a bike near the beach area. It's an easy way to see more of the Corniche in less time.

5. The Founder's Memorial

This memorial honors Sheikh Zayed, the man who built the UAE. It's a peaceful, modern place, a calm contrast to the busy city center.

The main structure is called The Constellation. It's a giant sculpture made of thousands of small metal pieces, shaped like a portrait of Sheikh Zayed. During the day it looks simple. At night, when it's lit up, it becomes something much more striking.

Admission is completely free, and you can simply walk in and visit any time.

Tip: Come after sunset. The Constellation is lit up in the evening, and that's when it looks best.
